Dress Shirt Alteration a Dying Art

I noticed lately on just about every fashion or clothing forum the question being asked:
"Does anyone know a good alteration shop that does good work on dress shirt altering." It's a reasonable question and most can name a tailor shop or two. The fact of the matter is that it takes years of experience to know the shirt pattern parts and how they relate to each other.

There are literally thousands of laundry cleaners across the country. Most of them do basic alteration, sleeve length adjustment, body adjustments like chest ,waist and hip. But ask them to make a new collar and cuffs or do a complete recut and they have no clue how to start. The sad thing about this situation is that their intentions are good but have never been in an apprenticeship or studied along side a master of the particular specialty like suit making, shirt making or true dress making. The point is that they have not really master all there is to know about dress shirt alterations or any other type of alterations. Most of these individuals work for just above minimum wage which is no incentive to spend money on learning the trade.

Good shirt alteration at an affordable price is becoming a dying art. Thanks to are fashion schools, most of them learn to be a "Jack of all and a Master of none". The environment is to cram everything into a students head for an excessive cost of about ten to twenty thousand a year.

Your individual shirt maker shops train their own personal and could care less about putting out knowledge about the art of shirt making and keeping the art alive at all levels of alteration in laundry cleaners,dress shops and small local alteration shop wanting to open. We have no schools to address the issue.
