REPLACING SHIRT COLLARS
Replacing shirt collars can extend the life of your shirts
about 3-5 years baring stains or tears to the body of the
shirt.
Most shirtmakers can replace your present collars with
white collars in either pinpoint or broadcloth. They will
give you any style of collar from your present collar.
If your squeamish about white collars you can have the
shirtmaker cut the collar from the shirt tail. The cut
portion is replaced with a color coordinated fabric.
Recommended for those wearing their shirt tucked in an pants.
Alternative is to sacrifice a duplicate shirt that still
has a large portion of fabric in good shape. So if your
considering long use of your shirts you may buy two of
each for future collars and cuffs.
If your presently buying made to measure shirts you may
ask your source to give you about half yard extra with
your custom made shirts. Use this fabric for new collars
and cuffs in the future.
Price range on collars can run from about $30 to about $ 50
on average.
Remember that good shirtmakers can make your cuffs and
collars smaller or bigger at the time you request your
order.Look for a shirtmakers that will take the old ones
and replace with new ones. There are sources that will
sell you collars and cuffs, you'll have to take them to
local tailor or laundry service if they have an
alternation department.
New collars can be made with fusible or non-fusible
interfacing thats the material inside the fabric that
gives your collars stiffness or stability.
There are many controversies on which interfacing type to
use. If your tired of your shirt collars getting wrinkled I
would recommend the fusible. If your from the old school
of non fusible be prepared to either do your own shirt
laundry, most laundry service have no idea of how to iron
a non fusible shirt collar.
